I was contacted by a G player in the States and a G player in Norway both using the first run, early “prerelease” version of the guitar electronics. The cards are labeled as version “A. You can also see jumper wires soldered across the board. The first time I tried to repair a failed op-amp in a G , I realized that the pin-out documentation was wrong on the schematic. The pin out information was correct on the G Service Manual Schematics schematic, which uses almost the same circuits. All the G s and G s that I have checked have op-amp pin outs consistent with the G

The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code. The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code.
In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year. On 4 digits date codes, the 1st and 2nd digits are the last two digits of the year. In either case, the remaining 2 digits are the week of manufacture 01 to With this in mind, remember if the last two digits of the source-date code are greater than 52, you’re not looking at the source-date code! Also it’s worth mentioning: On 3 digit date codes, you have to “guess” the decade of the pot or speaker. Usually this isn’t too difficult.
Examples of Source-Date Codes. With all this information in mind, can you identify the following manufacturer and date of these source-date codes?

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good.
It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all. The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly.
Vintage Sunn 1X15 Cabnet. Just arrived in the Attic – this early 70’s 1X15 inch Sunn bass cabinet. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, Sunn was one of the top bass amp and cabinet manufacturers.
This resulted in the so-called lawsuit period. During this period, Ibanez produced guitars under the Mann name to avoid authorities in the United States and Canada. The company has produced its own guitar designs ever since. The late s and early s were an important period for the Ibanez brand. Most Ibanez guitars were made by the FujiGen guitar factory in Japan up until the mid- to late s, and from then on Ibanez guitars have also been made in other Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Indonesia.
Cimar and Starfield were guitar and bass brands owned by Hoshino Gakki. In the s, Hoshino Gakki and Kanda Shokai shared some guitar designs, and so some Ibanez and Greco guitars have the same features. The Greco versions were sold in Japan and the Ibanez versions were sold outside Japan.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.
~ The Fender Blues Junior is a professional-quality tube guitar amplifier introduced in Since that time, the watt Blues Junior has been a favorite grab-and-go tube amp .
Epiphone Les Paul Epiphone Les Paul Dating back to and once a major rival of Gibson, the Epiphone company and brand were purchased by Gibson’s parent company in Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models.
All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood.
On to this he later attached side “wings” from a Epiphone hollowbody guitar in order to give it a more conventional look. This guitar, known as “The Log”, was later shown to Gibson executives, who initially passed on the idea of building them, but they changed their mind within a couple of years and the Les Paul Model guitar as we know it today was first released in These early “gold top” models were later joined by the black Les Paul Customs, and then the sunburst “Standards” of the late s.
Several Epiphone Les Paul models are very close to the classic Gibson models upon which they are based, while other models are designed with different features to keep the entry price low for students and budget-minded players. For example, some Epiphone Les Paul models use bolt-on neck construction and “slab” bodies which are generally less expensive to manufacture, while others stick with tradition and have arched maple tops and glued-in necks like their high-end Gibson counterparts.
At the mid and upper range of the Epiphone Les Paul range, most guitars retain practically all of the other essential Les Paul features — two humbucking or P90 single coil pickups, two volume and two tone controls, a three-way selector switch, body and neck binding, In addition to such long-running models as the Les Paul Standard, Studio and Custom, Epiphone has also released various artist signature and limited edition Les Paul models over the years.
These usually offer artist-endorsed combinations of features and cosmetics, or custom improvements and appearance upgrades that are not normally found on the standard models.

Since that time, the watt Blues Junior has been a favorite grab-and-go tube amp perfect for the studio and small venue gigs. Dating to around , it’s from a classic era for Fender tube amps. The aluminum drip-edge front panel was only offered for a short time on several Fender amp models making these a bit more prized. Well known users “With a balanced low-impedance output, you could use long cables without all the problems inherent in unbalanced high-impedance lines. Gibson was keen on having the low-impedance transformer close to the amp, so we made a special cable with a transformer on the other end, which you had to have in order to use it. But if you forgot your cable, you were out of luck—so we added the switch to go from low to high impedance. One position on the Les Paul Bass was meant to sound just like the Precision, and all the other settings were extra choices for the player.
The Triumph sounded so good it was scary; it was the finest bass I knew how to come up with, but the kids of that time were not ready for so many options. If I could have done something different, I would have made a bass with one great sound.
gibson melody maker usa made(not for sale) here we have a balst of the past vintage gibson melody maker. guitar is all original, its shows lots of natural aged finish cracks all over the body, this is a true relic, nothing artificial,1 single coil pickup, wrap around bridge, its a shortscale,it plays very nice, and sound really great.
E-H talking pedal I just earlier this evening found out that what I thought was a talking pedal was actually called a Golden Throat. What does a talking pedal do, and how does it work? Is it the same thing as a Golden Throat? They are completely different. The golden throat is a “talk box” like Frampton, Walsh, etc used. It is a speaker driver connected to a tube which goes in your mouth and needs to be miked through a PA to be used.
Your mouth acts as a filter. The Talking pedal is like a big wah wah pedal, but instead of saying “WAH” it says “eee aaaa iiii oooo uuuu” when it is moved, the vowel sounds. It goes in the path between the guitar and amp, much more useable than a talk box. But the talk box can make more different sounds. In the Bad Stone I can’t switch back and forth from auto to manual. Once I get it to be auto on the effect if I jar it too much it goes to manual so I have to jiggle the switch a bit.
On the Big Muff I can’t get it to go to tone bypass very often, when you switch it, it just loses all signal. I am gathering since I have a bit of a problem with both, it’s because of the old switch.

I would have called it a Custom 22S or something. I like the blade so much more than the rotary. A few clear coat indents or scratches but nothing through to the wood. It plays easily with low action and with the Fralin pickup it has a sweeter selection of single coil tones. Would be very at home in a modern country band or, of course, rock or blues. Not a 10 top but on another day I think it could have made the grade. Fender American Deluxe Pickup Assembly. Mounted on original Fender mint green pickguard.
